Who is Thanos?

Thanos is one of the most powerful and notorious villains in the Marvel universe. He is a member of an ancient alien race called the Eternals, who were genetically engineered by cosmic entities known as the Celestials. He was born on Titan, a moon of Saturn, where he lived as an outcast due to his deformities and his obsession with death. He eventually became a warlord who conquered many planets and slaughtered countless beings in his quest for ultimate power.

The origin of Thanos

The origin of Thanos is shrouded in mystery and legend. According to some sources, he was born with a genetic mutation that gave him a purple skin, a ridged chin, and enhanced strength and durability. He was also gifted with a brilliant mind and a curiosity for science and technology. However, he was rejected by his family and his people, who feared and despised him for his appearance and his nihilistic worldview. He developed a fascination with death, especially with a female embodiment of death known as Mistress Death, whom he fell in love with. He dedicated his life to pleasing her by killing as many living beings as possible, hoping to earn her affection.

The motivation of Thanos

The motivation of Thanos is complex and twisted. On one hand, he claims that he wants to balance the universe by eliminating half of its population, believing that this will prevent overpopulation, resource depletion, and suffering. He sees himself as a benevolent savior who acts for the greater good, even if it means sacrificing his own happiness and love. On the other hand, he is driven by a deep insecurity and a desire to prove himself worthy of Mistress Death's attention. He also harbors a subconscious self-loathing and a death wish, which makes him sabotage his own plans and allow his enemies to defeat him.

The powers and abilities of Thanos

The powers and abilities of Thanos are immense and varied. He is a master of various fields of science and magic, and he has access to advanced technology and weaponry. He is physically superior to most beings in the universe, possessing superhuman strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility, and reflexes. He can manipulate energy, matter, and reality to a limited extent, and he can telepathically communicate and control others. He is also a skilled strategist, tactician, and combatant, who can outsmart and overpower his foes. However, his greatest power comes from the Infinity Stones, which grant him unlimited control over the six aspects of existence: space, time, power, mind, soul, and reality.

What are the Infinity Stones?

The Infinity Stones are six cosmic artifacts that were created by the Big Bang that gave birth to the universe. They are the remnants of six singularities that existed before the universe, and they represent the fundamental forces of nature. They are immensely powerful and dangerous, and they can only be wielded by beings of extraordinary will and intelligence. Anyone who possesses all six stones can achieve godhood and reshape the universe according to their whims.

The history of the Infinity Stones

The history of the Infinity Stones is long and complicated. They have been sought after by many beings throughout the ages, who have used them for various purposes. Some of the notable wielders of the stones include the Celestials, who used them to create life; the Asgardians, who used them to protect the Nine Realms; the Dark Elves, who used them to plunge the universe into darkness; the Nova Corps, who used them to enforce peace and justice; and the Avengers, who used them to undo Thanos' snap and restore life.

The functions of the Infinity Stones

The functions of the Infinity Stones are as follows:

  • The Space Stone allows the user to travel across any distance or dimension, create portals, manipulate gravity, and alter the shape and size of objects.

  • The Time Stone allows the user to manipulate time, travel to the past or future, reverse or accelerate aging, create time loops, and see alternate timelines.

  • The Power Stone allows the user to enhance their physical attributes, unleash destructive blasts of energy, absorb or project any form of energy, and destroy entire planets.

  • The Mind Stone allows the user to access and control the minds of others, create or erase memories, alter personalities, project illusions, and enhance mental abilities.

  • The Soul Stone allows the user to manipulate souls, both living and dead, capture or release souls in a pocket dimension, see the true essence of others, and grant or take away life.

  • The Reality Stone allows the user to alter reality according to their wishes, create or destroy matter, transform or transmute objects or beings, and defy the laws of physics.

The locations of the Infinity Stones

The locations of the Infinity Stones vary depending on the timeline. In the main timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), they were scattered across different places until Thanos collected them all in 2018. He then used them to erase half of all life in the universe with a snap of his fingers. Five years later, in 2023, a group of Avengers traveled back in time to different points in history where they could retrieve the stones before Thanos did. They then used them to reverse Thanos' snap and bring back everyone who was dusted. However, this created an alternate timeline where Thanos from 2014 followed them to 2023 and tried to claim the stones for himself. He was ultimately defeated by Iron Man, who sacrificed his life by using the stones to disintegrate Thanos and his army. The Avengers then returned the stones to their original locations in their respective timelines. In another alternate timeline created by Loki's escape with the Space Stone in 2012 (as seen in Loki), he was captured by an organization called the Time Variance Authority (TVA), who claimed that they were responsible for maintaining a sacred timeline where there was only one set of Infinity Stones. They also revealed that they had many copies of the stones in their possession, which were useless outside their own reality.

How did Thanos collect the Infinity Stones?

Thanos collected the Infinity Stones by using his vast resources and army to track them down across the galaxy. He also employed various agents and allies to help him in his quest. Here is a summary of how he obtained each stone:

The events of Avengers: Infinity War

  • He obtained the Power Stone from Xandar (the home planet of the Nova Corps) by invading it off-screen before the movie began. He obtained the Space Stone from Loki, who had stolen it from the Asgardian vault before Asgard was destroyed. Thanos intercepted Loki's ship, which was carrying the surviving Asgardians, and killed most of them. He then tortured Thor and threatened to kill him unless Loki gave him the stone. Loki complied, but tried to stab Thanos, who easily killed him.

  • He obtained the Reality Stone from the Collector, who had acquired it from the Guardians of the Galaxy. Thanos lured Gamora, his adopted daughter, to Knowhere by creating an illusion that he had not arrived yet. He then captured her and revealed that he had already taken the stone.

  • He obtained the Soul Stone from Vormir, where it was guarded by Red Skull, who had been transported there by the Space Stone in 1945. Thanos learned that he had to sacrifice someone he loved to obtain the stone. He reluctantly threw Gamora off a cliff, killing her and unlocking the stone.

  • He obtained the Time Stone from Doctor Strange, who had surrendered it in exchange for Thanos sparing Tony Stark's life. Strange had used the stone to view 14,000,605 possible futures and found only one where the Avengers could win. He told Stark that giving up the stone was "the only way".

  • He obtained the Mind Stone from Vision, who had volunteered to have it removed from his forehead and destroyed by Wanda Maximoff. However, Thanos arrived in Wakanda, where Vision was being operated on by Shuri. He fought his way through the Avengers and their allies and ripped the stone out of Vision's head, killing him. Wanda tried to destroy the stone with her powers, but Thanos used the Time Stone to reverse her actions and take the stone.

The consequences of Thanos' snap

With all six stones in his possession, Thanos snapped his fingers and fulfilled his plan to erase half of all life in the universe. He then teleported to a distant planet, where he destroyed the stones to prevent anyone from undoing his work. However, his snap also caused a massive cosmic energy surge that was detected by Nick Fury on Earth. Before Fury disintegrated along with many others, he managed to send a distress signal to Captain Marvel using a modified pager.

The aftermath of Avengers: Endgame

Five years after Thanos' snap, Scott Lang returned from the quantum realm, where he had been trapped for what felt like five hours. He discovered that his daughter Cassie was now a teenager and that Hope van Dyne, along with half of the population, had disappeared in the snap. He then contacted Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff and proposed a plan to use the quantum realm as a means of time travel. They recruited Tony Stark, Bruce Banner (who had merged his intelligence with Hulk's body), Clint Barton (who had become a vigilante after losing his family), and Thor (who had become depressed and overweight after failing to stop Thanos). They split into teams and traveled to different points in time where they could retrieve the Infinity Stones before Thanos did.

  • Banner went to New York in 2012 during Loki's invasion and obtained the Time Stone from the Ancient One after convincing her that Doctor Strange had given it up willingly.

  • Rogers and Stark went to New York in 2012 as well but failed to secure the Space Stone due to interference from Loki (who escaped with it) and Hydra agents (who mistook Rogers for one of them). They then traveled to New Jersey in 1970 and stole an earlier version of the Space Stone from a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, where Stark also encountered his father Howard and Rogers saw his love Peggy Carter.

  • Lang and Barton went to New York in 2012 as well and retrieved the Mind Stone from Loki's scepter after Lang disabled Stark's arc reactor and Barton fought off Hydra agents.

  • Rocket and Thor went to Asgard in 2013 during Malekith's attack and extracted the Reality Stone from Jane Foster using a device provided by Banner. Thor also took his hammer Mjolnir after having a pep talk with his mother Frigga.

  • Nebula and Rhodes went to Morag in 2014 before Peter Quill could steal the Power Stone from an ancient temple. Rhodes knocked out Quill and took the stone, but Nebula was unable to return due to her cybernetic implants being linked to a past version of herself, who was loyal to Thanos. Thanos captured Nebula and learned of his future success and demise from her memories. He then sent the past Nebula to the present as a spy.

  • Romanoff and Barton went to Vormir in 2014 and learned from Red Skull that they had to sacrifice one of them to obtain the Soul Stone. After a brief struggle, Romanoff threw herself off the cliff, allowing Barton to claim the stone.

The Avengers returned to the present with the stones (except for the past Nebula, who secretly opened a portal for Thanos and his army) and created a new gauntlet to house them. Banner wore the gauntlet and snapped his fingers, restoring all the lives that Thanos had erased. However, Thanos arrived and bombarded the Avengers' compound, forcing them to confront him. Thanos revealed that he had destroyed the stones and that he intended to use the new ones to create a new universe with no memory of the old one. He then fought against Thor, Stark, and Rogers (who proved worthy of wielding Mjolnir) until he overpowered them. He summoned his army and declared that he would enjoy destroying Earth.

However, Doctor Strange arrived with other sorcerers, the restored Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, the Ravagers, and the armies of Wakanda and Asgard to fight Thanos and his forces. During the battle, Strange told Stark that they were in the one future where they would win. The Avengers managed to pass the gauntlet among themselves until Captain Marvel arrived and tried to fly it into a quantum tunnel in Luis' van. However, Thanos destroyed the van and retrieved the gauntlet. He tried to snap his fingers again, but Stark stole the stones from him and used them to disintegrate Thanos and his army, at the cost of his own life.

Following Stark's funeral, Thor appointed Valkyrie as the new ruler of New Asgard and joined the Guardians of the Galaxy. Rogers returned the Infinity Stones and Mjolnir to their original timelines and then decided to stay in the past and live a married life with Carter. In the present, an elderly Rogers passed on his shield and mantle to Sam Wilson.
